Voorhees Street Improvement Phase I
This project started because the 1905 steel bridge carrying Voorhees over the Norfolk Southern Railroad had rusted to the point that heavy vehicles could no longer go over the bridge. Not even ambulances were allowed. The railroad had not been used in many years and because it did not seem realistic for the railroad to be reactivated, the City Council decided to fill in the hole with compacted dirt with a roadway on top rather than installing a new bridge. This saved about $700,000.
When the City received $700,000 in Federal ARRA (stimulus) funds, the project grew from a bridge project to a roadway project extending from Washington to Kimball Street. The total available funding was $1,200,000 which allowed for pavement patching, a new overlay, new curb and gutter, and added a 7 foot wide sidewalk that is heavily used by walkers, runners, and bikers. The project surveying, design engineering, and construction engineering were performed by City of Danville engineering staff saving our tax payers at least $190,000 that can go to our roads.
